What is the AMALTHEA project about, and what challenge does it aim to address?
The AMALTHEA project aims to explore in-depth the phenomenon of gender-specific radicalisation and violent extremism under the lens of societal factors and individual characteristics, as well as specific gender-related concepts and ways in which these manifest in different contexts. AMALTHEA seeks to address the challenge of limited access to knowledge and lack of holistic approaches to combat against gender-related radicalisation and violent extremism.
What are the key outcomes or innovations you hope to achieve with this project?
At the project level, our ambition is to create new knowledge for policymakers and EU institutions to understand various parameters and dynamics behind the process of radicalisation and extremist violence, and further develop new approaches and innovative mechanisms that foster collaboration among key actors in the wider judicial ecosystem and enable the deployment of best practices to address gender-related radicalisation in various contexts.
What broader societal impact do you hope AMALTHEA will have?
AMALTHEA will provide new tools and methods to improve collaboration between law enforcement agencies, social service providers, educational institutions, and other societal actors, so that all types of resources are exploited in the most efficient way in the fight against radicalisation and violent extremism in modern society.
What is VUB’s role in the project, and what unique contribution are you making?
UB-CDSL is the project’s Legal & Data Manager, overseeing legal compliance procedures in the project. In its scientific role, VUB-CDSL will carry out a comprehensive analysis of regulatory and policy frameworks applicable in EU with respect to radicalisation and extremism, under the gender perspective.
What advice would you give to other VUB researchers considering applying for EU funding?
Plan with ambition, approach with precision.
