This summer, Belgium proudly reached the symbolic milestone of 100,000 public charging points, solidifying its position as a leading nation in the European transition to electric mobility. On August 20, 2025, the achievement was celebrated at the VUB campus with a symbolic event co-hosted by EV Belgium and the VUB MOBI Electromobility Research Centre, a global leader in research about electromobility.
The event began with speeches by Prof. Peter Schelkens (VUB Vice-rector for Innovation & Industry Relations), Philippe Vangeel (director EV Belgium) and Joeri Van Mierlo (MOBI Electromobility Research Centre), and brought together key figures from the sector to discuss the impressive growth and future trajectory of electric mobility. The gathering highlighted the rapid acceleration of EV adoption in the country, confirming that what began as a niche market for pioneers is now a mainstream reality.
With over 100,000 public charging points and 380,000 fully electric cars now on its roads, Belgium stands firmly among Europe’s top performers, even ranking third for charging infrastructure per capita.
"Reaching the 100,000 public charging point mark is not an endpoint, but proof that collaboration pays off," emphasised Philippe Vangeel, Director of EV Belgium, during the event. "Thanks to our members, the many researchers, including those at VUB, and clear choices made by policymakers in the past, a solid foundation has been laid. User confidence is growing, and electric mobility is no longer a niche product."
Looking ahead, EV Belgium and its members, alongside the VUB team, are resolute in their commitment to shape the next chapter. They are determined to meet the ambitious target of doubling the number of charging points by 2030. The collaborative effort, which has already brought Belgium to the forefront of the EV market, is seen as the key to achieving the nation's economic and sustainable transition.
