Confo Therapeutics, a biotechnology company and spin-off from VUB and VIB, has shared encouraging new results for a drug candidate designed to treat a serious complication of weight-loss surgery.
The drug candidate, called CFTX-2034, aims to treat a condition known as post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH). PBH is a severe disorder that can develop after weight-loss surgery, causing patients' blood sugar levels to drop dangerously low after eating. This can lead to confusion, fainting, and even seizures, severely affecting a patient’s independence and quality of life. Currently, there are no approved medicines to treat it.
Confo's new treatment works by regulating insulin production to keep blood sugar levels stable. The recent lab results show that CFTX-2034 successfully prevents these dangerous blood sugar drops. Furthermore, the drug is long-lasting, meaning patients might only need a single injection once a month.
Following these successful early results, Confo Therapeutics is now preparing the drug for its next major milestone: entering Phase 1 clinical trials to test its safety and effectiveness in humans.
