
In the past two decades, the number of young researchers in Flanders has increased considerably. However, the number of permanent jobs at the universities has remained the same, what makes more and more young researchers leaving the Flemish academic environment immediately after graduating.
A large number of them are continuing their career outside the academic environment. Today 9 out of 10 PhD students have a career outside the university. The step from the university to the job market is not always evident. A good preparation for a career outside the academic world is therefore necessary. That is why Flemish minister Hilde Crevits, responsible for Scientific Research, is investing 2 million euros in extra subsidies for Flemish universities to help young researchers flow into the labor market.
