sofia, the Flemish Supercomputer Centre’s (VSC) latest Tier-1 supercomputer hosted by VUB, has debuted at #222 in the TOP500 ranking of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. Even more impressive: sofia ranks #41 in the Green500, recognising the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers.
Located at the Penta Infra Bru01 data centre in Zellik Research Park, sofia was designed with sustainability at its core. Powered by green electricity, cooled using rainwater where possible, and equipped with heat recovery systems, it demonstrates that cutting-edge computing and sustainability can go hand in hand.
From AI and climate research to medical applications and large-scale simulations, sofia will support researchers across Flanders in tackling some of today’s most pressing scientific and societal challenges.
