What is your role at VUB TechTransfer?
My role as an Incubator Manager at VUB TechTransfer is multifaceted, requiring a blend of business acumen, mentorship skills, networking capabilities, and a deep understanding of the university's research and innovation ecosystem. My efforts contribute to the growth and prosperity of innovative startups and the overall impact of VUB's technology transfer initiatives.
What are your main responsibilities in this role?
For the time being, my main responsibility is ensuring in the near future for efficient resource allocations and facilities to startups by coordinating between different stakeholders the build of a new business incubator. This all happens in very close collaboration with the fantastic colleagues from INFRA and includes ensuring state of art office space, laboratory facilities and access to research resources right in the heart of the VUB Campus Etterbeek. In the years to come, my responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks and functions aimed at fostering the growth and success of early-stage companies, including mentorship and guidance, networking and partnerships, funding and investment and community building.
How long have you been with VUB TechTransfer?
I joined VUB TechTransfer in October 2021, so exactly 2 years now.
How have you seen TechTransfer evolve in recent years and how do you look back on it?
Being with TechTransfer for only 2 years is not enough to fully grasp all the changes and work that has been done by this amazing group of people over the past few years. But what I have experienced so far is that these people are very professional in many different areas. For instance, in the ERIS team, I have witnessed big efforts in streamlining processes that make it easier for researchers to apply for funding. The TechTransfer group also continuously enhances their global outreach and impact by establishing international collaborations and partnerships leading to alliances with other universities e.g. Eutopia, research institutions e.g. VIB and industry players.
What is the project you are most proud of at TechTransfer?
That would be the realization of the new Bio Incubator in the red Willy Van Der Meeren units on the VUB Campus Etterbeek. Building a business incubator is an opportunity to make a positive impact on the entrepreneurial ecosystem, support the strong and rich innovation present within the VUB, and empower individuals to achieve their dreams. The sense of pride that comes from creating a space where startups can thrive and grow is a reflection of the meaningful contribution I can make to the community and the world of business. But especially it allows building a supportive community as it requires the collaboration between different VUB departments making it a true VUB project. But I also have the feeling that this incubator creates a tight-knit community of entrepreneurs, mentors, and investors like our partner VIB with whom we now have a very supportive and close collaboration through this project. Knowing that I am part of building such a supportive network is very fulfilling, as it promotes collaboration and a sense of belonging among participants.
What is an ideal day off for you?
An ideal day would start with my daily routine of cardio and weight training, followed by a walk through nature, standing still at the wonders that surround us or a guided tour through a city or museum savoring art and history. Later in the day I join my daughters in their favourite activities and see them happy in what they love to do or what motivates them. Closing off the day with a BBQ and a bottle of Gouden Carolus in the presence of family and friends.
Last but not least, we have to know, what is your favourite invention of all time?
That would be the Printing Press. Johannes Gutenberg's invention of the printing press in the 15th century revolutionized the spread of information and knowledge, making books and written materials more accessible to a wider audience. I hope that the modern equivalent, i.e. global digitization, despite all its challenges can have the same effect.
