What is your role at VUB TechTransfer?
I am Head of the VUB Foundation, a department within VUB TechTransfer, responsible for philanthropic fundraising.
What are your main responsibilities in this role?
I am responsible for setting up and implementing the university's policy regarding philanthropic fundraising. The VUB Foundation raises donations, legacies and sponsorships for the benefit of research and educational projects with a societal impact. Of course, I don’t have to do this by myself, and I am very fortunate to have 4 great team members, each of them with their own expertise and drive to help our researchers and students getting the funds they need.
How long have you been with VUB TechTransfer?
I have been working at TechTransfer since 2015. I started as a contract administrator while I was still writing my master's thesis, and then I moved on as a legal counsel after getting my master's degree. Since 2023, I have been Head of the VUB Foundation.
How have you seen VUB TechTransfer evolve in recent years and how do you look back on it?
TechTransfer has grown in all areas in recent years. Just think of the revenue, the number of colleagues, the amount of approved projects, or the new funds and chairs. We dare to question ourselves and work on efficiency, which keeps us evolving.
What is the project you are most proud of at VUB TechTransfer?
I am particularly proud of the legacy policy we have implemented in recent years. We have developed an A-to-Z policy where the testator and their wishes are the main priority. We take a personal approach and ensure a good match between the testator's will and the researcher. In this way, the testator and the researcher each create a significant impact and strengthen each other.
What is an ideal day off for you?
Reading a good book in front of the fireplace with a cinnamon roll, a coffee and some good company!
Last but not least, we have to know, what is your favourite invention of all time?
As fantastic as bookstores and the texture and smell of books are, for me the best invention is definitely an e-reader!
