What is your role at VUB TechTransfer?
I am a member of the legal team of VUB TechTransfer.
What are your main responsibilities in this role?
Coordination of the legal team of VUB Tech Transfer which gives legal support to VUB researchers and business developers with regard to techtransfer matters and contracts with industry and other third parties. Legal support in spin-off contracting, in framework agreements with the Strategic Research Centra and the university spin-off fund Qbic. Follow up on legislation and regulations in the tech transfer domain.
How long have you been with VUB TechTransfer?
I have been with VUB TechTransfer since 2005.
How have you seen TechTransfer evolve in recent years and how do you look back on it?
VUB TechTransfer has undoubtedly grown strongly in order to keep pace with the additional tasks entrusted to the university techtransfer offices. The roles and functions in a TTO in general and therefore also at VUB have become more diverse and specialized. European and regional legislation applicable to the valorization of research results has also clearly increased, especially in recent years.
What is the project you are most proud of at TechTransfer?
It is certainly rewarding to be able to support VUB researchers in drawing up and sometimes helping negotiate contracts that bridge the gap between applied research and society/industry. When this process ends in a good partnership, big or small, it is always a nice experience.
What is an ideal day off for you?
A day on which I can do all or most of the following activities: a culinary or cultural trip with friends or family, a nice yoga or wellness session, enjoying the view and some sun in my garden, a walk in the nature reserve close to our house and spotting a beaver or wild boar in the evening, laughing hard at a silly thing, and so much more.
Last but not least, we have to know, what is your favourite invention of all time?
This was the toughest question of this interview but after some deliberation, I think it's the washing machine 😊. It has freed a lot of time to spend on more pleasant things, like drinking a glass of good wine with friends or family…
