IP in AI and software
Join us for the 2nd TechTransfer Talk on June 8th!
The proliferation of interconnected systems has led to a surge in innovation in computer programs, apps, and user interfaces. However, securing patents for computer-implemented inventions has proven to be a challenging field at the European Patent Office. This is particularly true for inventions using Artificial Intelligence (AI), which have recently found practical applications across a variety of technical fields. AI-related inventions pose similar questions and issues with regard to intellectual property protection.
During the 2nd TechTransfer Talk, David Lesthaeghe, a European and Belgian Patent Attorney at De Clercq & Partners, will provide practical advice and tips on the current state of software protection. Using interactive examples and illustrations, we will explore the types of software inventions that can be patented, strategies for overcoming software exclusion, and other aspects of intellectual property protection that require careful consideration. The session will also give special emphasis to the patentability of AI and practical approaches for dealing with AI inventions.
Furthermore, the session will touch on the complex legal issues surrounding open source software. Although the use of open source software has become increasingly popular, it raises a host of intellectual property concerns. Cristina Boca, IP Business Specialist at imec, will explore the different software license types, open-source licenses and business models.
