LUCEDA PHOTONICS

Luceda Photonics, a spin-off company of VUB B-PHOT, imec and the Photonics Research Group of the Ghent University, was created in June 2014. Luceda Photonics wants photonic IC engineers to enjoy the same first-time-right design experience as electronic IC designers. 

The Luceda founding team consists of Erwin De Baetselier (CEO and VUB alumnus), Pierre Wahl (VUB B-PHOT Post-Doc), Wim Bogaerts (Prof. at UGent PRG/IMEC), Martin Fiers (Dr. at INTEC UGent), Pieter Dumon (Dr. at UGent PRG/IMEC), and Joris Geessels (Software Engineer at UGent). 

Luceda Photonics automates and integrates the complete photonic design flow. The Python-based platform enables design teams to easily share and reuse their photonic design IP using a standard language. Its team has a combined experience in photonics of over 50 years. This is invaluable when helping customers create manufacturable designs. Its design products bundle this expertise, enabling customers to achieve their first tape-out quickly and get their designs right the first time.

On August 12th, 2025, Luceda Photonics announced its acquisition by SMTX Technologies Singapore Pte. Ltd., part of Semitronix Group. Semitronix is internationally recognised for its expertise in yield enhancement, data analytics and wafer-level testing in the semiconductor industry. This strategic partnership represents a major milestone for Luceda, and will empower customers to drastically increase design, production speed and efficiency, leading to higher quality and yield for their designs.

Luceda Photonics will continue to operate independently with its headquarters remaining in Belgium. The operational management will stay in place, ensuring continuity in both customer relationships and operational execution.
