Researchers from the VUB, the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa), Harvard University (USA), the National University of Singapore (Singapore), and CNST (Italy) have developed the world's first meta-surface laser producing superchiral light. Superchiral light is light with an ultra-high angular momentum and a rotation of the light about its own axis, so that the light propagates according to a helix. The new laser can be used as a kind of optical screwdriver.
“Door gebruik te maken van dit licht kunnen we op een totaal nieuwe manier microstructuren manipuleren. Licht kan gebruikt worden voor besturing: om dingen te verplaatsen en te sorteren. Gedraaid licht kan micro-apparatuur aandrijven om een stroom op gang te brengen, en om centrifuges na te bootsen, daar waar klassieke fysieke, mechanische systemen niet meer kunnen ingezet worden omdat ze te groot zijn. Verschillende industrieën en onderzoeksgebieden hebben superchiraal licht nodig om hun processen te verbeteren, waaronder de voedsel-, computer- en biomedische industrie,” says Prof. Vincent Ginis of VUB's Data Lab and the Applied Physics Research Group.
