What is the RegulAIze project about, and which challenges related to regulatory compliance in the AI and data economy does it aim to address?
RegulAIze is developing an end-to-end framework that helps organisations comply with EU rules such as the GDPR, AI Act and Data Act. It addresses the high cost and risk caused by manually interpreting complex legislation, using fragmented reporting tools and working with siloed systems. This is particularly important for SMEs. The project aims to make compliance a built-in feature of AI services and European data spaces rather than a separate, largely manual task.
What are the key innovations of RegulAIze?
RegulAIze combines several technologies in one compliance ecosystem. Its main innovations are: explainable AI assistants that convert legal texts into machine-readable obligations; verifiable, blockchain-anchored Compliance Cards for datasets, AI models and processes; privacy-preserving technologies such as federated learning, fully homomorphic encryption and zero-knowledge proofs; synthetic data and digital twins for testing representativeness and reducing bias; and knowledge graphs linked to advanced vector search for compliance reasoning. The project will also provide training through the RegulAIze Academy and test the framework in six real-world pilots.
What specific role and expertise does VUB contribute to the RegulAIze consortium? Europe?
VUB-CDSL plays a pivotal role in the RegulAIze project, leading the translation of complex EU data regulations into machine-readable obligations using explainable LLMs. Additionally, we contribute to establishing the project's training and skills-development pillar to educate stakeholders on automated compliance and trusted European data spaces.
How will RegulAIze contribute to more trustworthy, secure, and scalable AI and data use across Europe in the long term?
In the long term, RegulAIze aims to make regulatory checks more automated, transparent and reusable across European data spaces. Secure and auditable transactions, privacy-preserving data processing and verifiable compliance credentials can help organisations demonstrate that their data, AI models and processes meet legal requirements. By reducing compliance costs and validating the framework across several sectors, the project is intended to strengthen trust and support the wider adoption of scalable, privacy-preserving AI and data services in Europe.
