On May 5th, 2026, the VUB Photonics Campus had the honour of welcoming His Majesty King Philippe and Her Majesty Queen Mathilde. The Royal Couple was immersed in the world of light technology and high-tech innovation.
The visit took place at B-PHOT, the VUB’s research and innovation centre for photonics. Founded thirteen years ago by Professor Hugo Thienpont, B-PHOT has evolved into one of the most advanced laboratories globally. The centre’s work is at the forefront of optical technology, contributing to major international projects such as the development of complex mirrors for the future Einstein Telescope.
Exploring the power of light
Upon their arrival, the King and Queen were greeted by Professor Thienpont, Governor Jan Spooren, and Mayor Kris Poelaert. The visit included a deep dive into the versatile applications of photonics.
"Photonics goes much further than one might think," Professor Thienpont explained. "Light technology can help make our food safer or accelerate internet speed. It enables self-driving cars, and photonics has also become indispensable in cancer and diabetes research. Light technology is being fully deployed in industry, data communications, aerospace, healthcare, food safety, and much more."
Strengthening the link between science and society
Reflecting on the visit, Professor Thienpont noted the King’s particular interest in the synergy between academia and industry, as well as his fascination with space travel. The royal visit serves as a prestigious recognition of the campus's role as a hub for groundbreaking research and technological valorisation in Flanders and beyond.
