What increasing security challenges are IoT systems facing?
IoT (Internet of Things) systems are facing a growing number of security challenges, primarily due to the rapid expansion of resource constrained devices, their inherent vulnerabilities, and the increasing sophistication of cyber attacks. The field of digital forensics presents unique challenges, as investigators must collect, preserve, and analyse data across diverse systems and networks while maintaining chain of custody and compliance with privacy regulations.
How does SALUS want to address these challenges?
SALUS aims to address those challenges by developing advanced forensic IoT tools for threat detection, collection of evidence, and cross-agency collaboration, as well as set of policies and procedures for law enforcement agencies, all while ensuring compliance with EU legal and ethical frameworks
What specific role does VUB play within the SALUS consortium
VUB’s Cyber and Data Security Lab (CDSL) will provide an in-depth analysis of legal, fundamental rights and ethics issues associated with IoT forensic systems, and will develop a legal and ethical framework for the implementation of SALUS proposed solutions, with a special focus on aspects of privacy, confidentiality, transparency, trustworthiness, fairness, dignity, autonomy and equality.
How do you envision SALUS contributing to broader societal and economic impact?
SALUS plans to carry out a number of impact assessment studies to evaluate the economic benefits of AI and IoT technologies in security contexts by offering valuable insights and new business scenarios for economic growth and shifts in labour dynamics. This will enable the implementation of SALUS’ proposed solutions by various stakeholders operating at different fields, unlocking the full exploitation potential for secure, AI-driven IoT technologies, and support the development of economically sustainable strategies in the era of IoT. In addition, SALUS will develop a monitoring tool to continuously evaluate the impact of its technologies from a societal perspective. This approach will ensure that SALUS is aligned with societal needs as it will provide real-time feedback on the proposed solutions as these develop over time
