VUB innovation startup TARC (The Augmented Reality Company) has been awarded the Jury Award at the MedTech Accelerator Closing Ceremony 2026.
Co-founded by VUB researchers Taylor Frantz (computer vision expert) and Jef Vandemeulebroucke (scientific expert) alongside Frederick Van Gestel (clinical expert), TARC addresses a critical challenge in neurosurgery: the risk of complications during external ventricular drain (EVD) placement.
The standard approach to EVD placement relies on free-hand procedures that can be variable and operator-dependent. TARC offers portable, augmented reality (AR)-based guidance directly at the patient's bedside. By extending image-guided navigation beyond traditional operating rooms, the technology aims to allow faster, more accurate interventions and reduce avoidable risks.
The MedTech Accelerator program supports promising health innovations, bringing together founders, coaches, and partners to advance surgical technologies toward clinical application.
Warm congratulations to the entire TARC team on this fantastic recognition of their pioneering work!
