On 10 June 2025, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Sibelga, the Brussels energy network operator, signed a framework agreement to establish a long-term partnership in research, development, education, and training within the energy sector. This collaboration strengthens Brussels’ efforts in achieving its climate goals and driving the energy transition forward.
The agreement was formally signed by Jan Danckaert (Rector VUB), Annemie Schaus (Rector ULB), Inne Mertens (CEO Sibelga), and Raphaël Lefere (Secretary-General Sibelga).
Through this partnership, the three parties aim to boost innovation and knowledge-sharing in the context of Brussels' climate objectives. The framework agreement outlines a wide range of potential initiatives, including:
- Joint research and development projects on energy and sustainability;
- Educational and training programmes involving staff members from all partners;
- The potential establishment or funding of a university chair in the energy sector;
- Joint conferences, study days and seminars.
“The energy transition is a major challenge for Brussels and its inhabitants. It is an issue that demands a collective response,” said ULB Rector Annemie Schaus. “A university is not an island. This new agreement between ULB, VUB and Sibelga is further proof of that. Academic and public actors are pooling their knowledge, expertise and experience to advance education, research and innovation. In doing so, we are working towards tangible solutions for the future.”
Sibelga, as Brussels' energy network operator, brings hands-on experience from the field. VUB and ULB contribute cutting-edge research and education. By bridging the gap between the business world and academia, the three institutions hope to jointly contribute to a sustainable and liveable future for all residents of Brussels.
“The energy transition calls for cooperation – and critical thinking,” concluded VUB Rector Jan Danckaert. “As a university, we do not only share knowledge; we must also have the courage to question existing systems and thereby foster renewal. With this agreement, we strengthen our role as an academic partner in the energy transition, in dialogue with the city, its residents, and other stakeholders.”

At VUB TechTransfer, we are proud to see this agreement as a powerful example of how interdisciplinary collaboration can drive sustainable innovation. By connecting researchers, industry, and public actors, we help turn knowledge into real-world impact – for Brussels and beyond.
