€3m for new cancer offensive

A consortium of the VUB and three Flemish companies has a budget of 3 million euros to test a new immunotherapy on patients with colon cancer. (Ex-) professor Kris Thielemans (VUB) is the scientific leader of the project.

The VUB AI Experience Center is a high-tech test, demonstration and meeting environment where companies, technological entrepreneurs, researchers and policy makers can experiment with AI and work together to develop and produce technological solutions. Research by Prof. Kelly Ickmans and Roselien Pas shows that pain education works successfully with children who suffer from chronic pain. Thanks to PNE4Kids, a Pain Neuroscience Education program, kids are less sensitive to pain, are less inhibited in their daily activities and experience less fear of pain.

In only a couple of days, the VUB spin-off Konligo that wants to revolutionise the event sector, has raised €300.000. The objective is to accelerate the development of its lightweight and transformable structures. “Ghostly” is an Android game for rehabilitation of patients suffering from motor and neuro-muscular disorders. In the game’s challenging and rewarding game scenarios, a character will be controlled by the muscle activity of the patient, sensed from the Delsys Trigno Avanti Sensors and interpreted by the game software.

New spin-off SAY IT Labs

This new VUB spin-off, in collaboration with imec, developed a video game for children who stutter. In their associated ETRO-Lab they used software technology and speech recognition. They are currently creating a fun and engaging speech therapy experience called Fluency Friends, where players control colorful cartoon characters through treacherous obstacles.

Bugs 2 to the rescue

More and more invasive exotic species are found in our regions. These species occur outside of their natural range and cause damage to native biodiversity. Belgium has 26 invasive exotic aquatic plants. In the "Bugs 2 the rescue" project of VUB young people and nature volunteers work together with scientists to stop the spread of specific invasive exotic aquatic plants.

Felix Van de Maele, CEO of VUB spin-off Collibra, was named a person of the year by De Tijd. Collibra was the first belgian unicorn in 2019. The company was founded in 2008. Today it has about 600 employees in 8 offices in different countries over the world. Read more.

The success of immunotherapy

Prof. dr. Bart Neyns and his colleagues of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences have made remarkable strides in a new treatment of cancer whereby one's own body cells are used to attack the tumor. Our immune system consists of different types of cells, including dendritic cells, that help attack the cancer. Those cells are inadequately present in tumors.
